What is relationship counseling?

Relationship counseling, or couples counseling, is a type of psychotherapy.

During treatment, you and your spouse or significant other work with me, Dr. Steven Gotlib, to resolve conflicts, work on your communication skills, and improve daily interactions.

Who should consider relationship counseling?

Consider relationship counseling if you or your significant other:

  • Have trouble expressing your feelings
  • Have one or more unsolvable disagreements
  • Experience infidelity, addiction, or abuse
  • Want a stronger relationship
  • Have trouble making decisions together

Even if you don’t have any obvious “problems,” relationship counseling can bring you and your significant other closer together.

What happens during relationship counseling?

I tailor relationship counseling to each couple's needs and goals.

During the first few sessions, I ask about your relationship, lifestyle, and the problems you want to solve. I interview you and your partner together and then again separately. The more open you can be, the better I can help you improve your relationship.

After getting to know you both, I recommend a meeting schedule to address the identified problems and point out difficulties each of you is having with the other in terms of communicating your feelings and wishes.

Is relationship counseling effective?

The effectiveness of relationship therapy depends on your commitment to the treatment process. To ensure treatment goes smoothly, I recommend:

  • Being open and honest
  • Preparing yourself for discomfort
  • Listening openly to your partner(s)
  • Putting in the time and effort

I have helped many couples improve their relationship by improving communication and understanding and avoiding the extremely costly and financially painful effects of divorce.

What if my partner refuses to participate in relationship counseling?

You can’t force your spouse or significant other to participate in relationship counseling. If your loved one is unwilling or uninterested, work on yourself. Individualized counseling can teach you skills to build your self-esteem and work on issues you’re facing in your own life. When divorce is unavoidable, I am available to be of support through that difficult process.
