What is a second opinion consultation?

A second opinion consultation provides additional information about the psychiatric treatment options that may be best for you.

If you’ve been diagnosed with a behavioral disorder, such as anxiety, depression, or attention-deficit anxiety disorder (ADHD), a second opinion consultation can assess the effectiveness of your current treatment regimen and make adjustments as necessary.

Even if you love your current psychiatrist, working with a new provider can be beneficial. Other perspectives and opinions can help you take treatment a step further.

Who should consider a second opinion consultation?

There are several reasons why a person might seek a second psychiatric opinion. I work with patients who want second opinions even though they like their previous psychiatrist but feel their diagnosis may be inaccurate or their treatment plan may not be helping them manage their problems as well as they might.

It's important to note that it's ultimately the individual's decision whether to seek a second psychiatric opinion. As a psychiatrist, who is expertly trained in mental health, I can make personalized treatment recommendations.

What should I bring to a second opinion consultation?

Please bring the following to your second opinion consultation:

  • Health insurance information and driver's license
  • Questions and concerns you have
  • Name and contact information of your current psychiatrist and physician
  • Results from any recent medical tests

If you take any medications or supplements, write the names down and share that information me, Dr. Steven Gotlib, as well.

What happens during a second opinion consultation?

At my practice, Steven L. Gotlib, MD, PC, a second opinion consultation begins with a review of your previous treatment and available studies.

I will ask about your mental health diagnosis and current treatment regimen. Let me know if you’ve recently experienced a change in symptoms or feel like counseling is no longer working.

After gathering all of the information, I will discuss my impression and recommendations to help you take your treatment further.
